RILLA...in Singapore

RILLA...in Singapore

So there's no one to see me consume what I can only describe as THE most ghetto dinner ever (saltines with butter and some apple-pomelo yogurt) while catching up on How I Met Your Mother episodes online.

I have to watch HIMYM online because I dont get American TV in Singapore. Except for a couple of HBO channels and a couple of Discovery Channels and E!. But the programming is delayed, so I'm watching last season's Keeping Up With the Kardashians....so I'm all caught up on them.

And I have to watch HIMYM online at home, because I have to use my VPN so that the internet thinks I'm in America. Because in Singapore, on Singapore internet, you cant stream. Which means that for the most part, I am without ESPN360, Pandora, CBS.com, hulu and anything else streaming. Except YouTube.

So to celebrate my access to television, I poured myself a glass of wine. From a screw top bottle. That was S$15 on sale. (Regular price: S$25).

And now I'm eating leftover Thanksgiving cookies that I smuggled back into Singapore from my trip to the US to visit the fam last week.

I'm VERY glad there's no one here to witness this progression of events. And judge me for it. To my face.

DOLA?

Downside of Living Alone?

It's not totally a downside...maybe just a side-effect. Or an oddity. Or  something.

It has to do with food.

When I grocery shop, I tend to buy things that are on sale. Especially produce. Things that are in-season are fresher, better and more likely to be on sale. So that's what I do. And if something's on REAL good sale, I buy a lot.

This is a great strategy for buying healthy, affordable groceries. Not so much for making meals that aren't bizarre.

As a result, I tend to eat a lot of side dishes. Most things that my mother would consider a side dish, I consider dinner. For example, this week, because cabbage was on sale, I made an awesome cabbage/apple slaw. And proceeded to have that for dinner. It was delicious. But it was a side dish.

I consider this a side effect of living alone. It's rarely worth the effort for me to plan and cook a full meal for just myself. Between the shopping and preparing and cooking - AND DISHWASHING (reminder: my apt does not have a dishwasher. I wash everything by hand.) - it's just not something I'm into.

So I guess I'll continue having side dishes for dinner. Maybe I should reinstate family dinner night for FrankieWayne and The Tad. Hmmm....

Reasons I Love Living Alone #23

I made crab & corn chowder for dinner. Then, I sat on the couch with the soup pot in my lap and ate directly from the pot. Because I didn't want to dirty another dish.

And no one has to know.

Reasons I Love Living Alone #22:

When I make ghetto cabinet nachos*, I don't have to share.

*ghetto cabinet nachos are nacho-esque foods made from the miscellaneous odds, ends and bits found in the cabinet. the term 'ghetto cabinet nachos' can be applied to a pretty broad range of recipes, that consist of the following basics: a crunchy/crusty thing, a saucy something, some cheesy-ness and then some other stuff. the version I employed tonight was tomato basil Wheat Thins, topped with sliced olives, leftover marinara sauce and shredded mozzarella. heated in the toaster oven until the cheese melted, then eaten right out of the pan while watching Glee.

Reasons I Love Living Alone: #6

I wear a retainer every night when I go to sleep. Sometimes I wear it when I take a nap.

Sometimes I like to come home from work and lie on the couch and wear my soft clothes and my retainer and watch bad tv until I fall asleep. On the couch. With the lights and tv on. And my retainer in my mouth.

You know...occasionally...sometimes...not that often....

Reasons I Love Living Alone: #14

Tonight for dinner I ate a tomato and some corn.

Tomato: Sprinkled a little salt and pepper on it, bit into it like an apple and proceeded as such through the remainder of the tomato. While standing in the kitchen, leaning over the sink to catch the (inevitable) drips.

Corn: Opened and drained the can of Del Monte fresh cut golden sweet Whole Kernel Corn. Proceeded to eat said corn directly from can with long, skinny spoon. While sitting on the couch watching Big Bang Theory. Uninterrupted.

You cant get away with mess like that when others are around. I'm just saying.

Reasons I Love Living Alone #21

When I find out that a wine glass will fit in my lap desk cup holder and sit around watching tv and updating Facebook without having to reach ALL THE WAY to the coffee table for my glass of wine, there's no one around to call me lazy.

And 14 minutes later when I learn (the hard way) that putting a wine glass in the cup holder of my lap desk is a little unstable, there's no one to laugh at me and my wine-stained lap.

There's also no one to help me sop up the wine from the rug, the loveseat, the lap desk and my lap. But then, maybe I don't need help sopping up wine from my lap.

Reasons I Love Living Alone #27

When Pickle gets knocked up and has to replace furniture with baby furniture I can offer my home as a "safe place" for her buffet table to come live.

And unlike previous living situations, when I find a piece of furniture I want in my life, I don't have to listen to someone say "I just don't like it" and insist that I un-assemble the piece I had just assembled and store it under my bed.

If I want to get half-way through my "spring cleaning" project of cleaning out closet and dresser drawers and stop to make ghetto tuna casserole, leaving clothing strewn about...I can.

AND if I wanted to leave my apartment mid-project for the next couple of days, the only person inconvenienced by this will be me.

Reasons I Love Living Alone #11

I can sit around reading teenage vampire romance stories for hours on end without interruption. Except for the small voice in the back of my head saying "I can't BELIEVE you are still reading this mess."

I can come home from the grocery store and drink a bottle of pink champagne without having to share.

That's right, I said bottle. Of pink champagne. On a Monday. w00t!

I can wear Tennessee Titans sweatpants with a bright orange U.of Tennessee Vols t-shirt and a Huskies sweatshirt and black high heels.

I mean, technically my outfit matches. The t-shirt and sweatpants both say "Tennessee". The sweatshirt and sweatpants are both heather gray with elastic cuffs. And since the outfit's gray, clearly black shoes are the way to go.

Right?

New Neighbors

I got some new upstairs neighbors recently. I remember seeing them move in, but I dont remember exactly when that was. Maybe between Thanksgiving and Christmas? Anyway, new neighbors who I've not yet met.

I really don't know if the apartment was vacant for a while or if the new people are just thumpier than the previous tenants, but I have noticed a SEVERE increase in noises from above since the new people moved in.

To be fair, their thumping hasnt woken me up or prevented me from having fun, entertaining, sleeping, showering, etc. I just hear them. When I'm up at odd hours, I hear that they're up. They take showers around 4:30am-5am and go to bed 10pm-ish. I dont know who he/she/they are but I know their schedule.

They also seem to vacuum a lot. I mean, A LOT. Maybe they vacuum a normal amount, but compared to how much I vacuum, it's a lot. I hate vacuuming. I didnt own one until a few weeks ago.

And like Pavlov's dogs, every time I hear their vacuum, I look at my floor. And realize exactly how dirty my rug looks and I feel bad and think I should probably get up and vacuum. Which is exactly the kind of judgment I was trying to avoid by living alone. Crap.

RILLA #20

Reasons I Love Living Alone #20:

When South Carolina plays Clemson at 12pm ET (which is 9am PT) on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, I can get up early to make coffee and cinnamon rolls and watch the game and yell at the TV all I want. And sometimes, there is a lot of yelling. Like when South Carolina decides to spend the entire first quarter getting penalties for holding.

Reasons I Love Living Alone: #24

If I come home from trivia at the Kangaroo & Kiwi on my birthday and sit on the couch eating chocolate cake, drinking milk straight from the jug and watching Center Stage on DVD until well after midnight, no one will judge me.

Until later, when I tell them what I did. But in the moment, there's no judgement, just pure unadulterated pleasure.

If I wanted to come home from vacation in Peru and leave my suitcase unpacked in the living room while eating a BIG salad and then napping through season three of Sex and the City...I could. You know, hypothetically...if I wanted to.

The dirty dishes that are currently in the sink are all dishes that I dirtied and put in the sink. And they will stay in the sink until I decide to wash them.

Watching the "Soulja Boy" dance instructional video on YouTube to learn the dance. Then doing the dance along with the music video. Several times. At midnight. Last Wednesday.

If I want to listen to Gnarlz Barkley and dance around in my bathrobe while getting dressed, I can. I dont have to worry about disturbing anyone or being judged.
